How to Install a Vessel Basin: Step-by-Step Guide

What Is a Vessel Basin?

A vessel basin (also known as an above-counter basin) sits on top of the vanity benchtop rather than being recessed into it. Popular in contemporary Australian bathrooms, vessel basins come in a range of materials — ceramic, stone, glass, and concrete — and create a stunning focal point in any bathroom. Step 1: Prepare the Benchtop

Start by positioning your vessel basin on the benchtop to find the ideal placement. As a general rule, centre the basin on the benchtop and ensure it's at least 100–150mm from the back wall to allow space for the tapware. Use a pencil to mark the centre point of the basin and the position of the drain hole.

Using your drill, cut a hole for the waste/drain at the marked location. The required hole size will depend on your waste assembly — check the manufacturer's specifications. If your benchtop is stone or engineered stone, use a diamond-tipped hole saw and work slowly to avoid cracking.

Step 2: Install the Waste Assembly

Thread the pop-up waste assembly up through the drain hole from underneath the benchtop. Apply a bead of silicone sealant around the underside of the waste flange before inserting it, to create a watertight seal. Tighten the locking nut from below using your wrench — be firm but don't overtighten, as this can crack the benchtop. Wipe away any excess silicone with a damp cloth.

Step 3: Position and Seal the Basin

Apply a continuous bead of mould-resistant silicone sealant around the perimeter of the drain hole on the benchtop surface. Carefully lower the vessel basin into position, aligning the basin drain with the waste assembly below. Press gently and firmly to seat the basin and ensure the sealant makes full contact. Use a spirit level to confirm the basin is perfectly level — adjust as needed before the silicone sets.

Allow the silicone to cure for the manufacturer's recommended time (usually 24 hours) before using the basin.

Step 4: Install the Tapware

Vessel basins require a tall mixer tap (typically 300–350mm high) to accommodate the basin's elevated height. Mark the tap hole position on the benchtop — typically centred behind the basin — and drill to the size specified by the tap manufacturer.

Insert the tap through the hole, apply plumber's tape to the threads, and tighten the locking nut from below. Connect the hot and cold flexible hoses to the tap's inlet connections, then to the water supply valves beneath the vanity. Hand-tighten first, then snug up with a wrench — do not overtighten.

Step 5: Connect to Water Supply (Licensed Plumber Required in Australia)

In Australia, any work involving the connection to or disconnection from water supply pipes must be carried out by a licensed plumber. This is a legal requirement under Australian plumbing regulations in all states and territories. Contact your local licensed plumber to complete the water supply connection and ensure everything is correctly tested and signed off.

Step 6: Final Checks and Finishing

Once your plumber has connected the water supply and confirmed there are no leaks, turn on the water and test the basin. Check for any drips around the waste assembly or tap connections. Run the water and confirm the drain is flowing freely and the pop-up waste is operating correctly.

Finish by applying a neat bead of silicone sealant around the base of the tap where it meets the benchtop, if required by the tap design.

• Choose a mould-resistant silicone formulated for wet areas.
• If your benchtop is timber or laminate, ensure it's thoroughly sealed before installing a wet area fixture.
• Take your time with measurements — errors are harder to fix once silicone has cured.
